Karen Miles, AOS judge and RMJC member
Formal meeting starts at 7:30 pm.
Location - Montview Presbyterian Church, 1980 Dahlia St., Denver, CO, 80220.
Tolumnias and other Treasures
Karen collected her first orchid in 1965 while her family lived in the Canal Zone in Panama. Back in the States her collection grew rapidly as she received divisions in exchange for caring for plants of a friend. A move to Houston allowed a greenhouse to be built, and the orchid hobby expanded explosively. An account of her move to Denver towing a trailer of orchids through an early blizzard was published in the AOS Bulletin - almost all the orchids survived.
Among the plants that flourished in Houston were the equitant Oncidiums, now called Tolumnias. Hybridization in this group was just beginning, and Karen and Anita Aldrich shared plants, pollen and ideas. Anita continued and became a recognized leader in the breeding of this group, while Karen maintained a more generalized collection. In this talk Karen would like to share thoughts on growing Tolumnias and other small choice plants.

Brenda Oviatt from Botanica Ltd.
Formal meeting starts at 7:30 pm.
Location - Montview Presbyterian Church, 1980 Dahlia St., Denver, CO, 80220.
Our Favorite Angraecoids and Why You Should Grow Them Too!
Brenda will speak about Angraecoids - the common term used for the two smaller subtribes (Aerangidinae and Angraecinae) within the Vanda Tribe. Many species in this group are not readily available; in part because they're from regions of the world that are falling victim to habitat destruction. Brenda provides a mix of terminology, culture information and beautiful images to both educate and entice growers to desire more of these special orchids. Brenda will be bringing plants to sell and gladly accepts preorders at Botanica Ltd.

Formal meeting starts at 7:30 pm.
Location - Montview Presbyterian Church, 1980 Dahlia St., Denver, CO, 80220.
Marvelous Miniature Orchids
Although miniature orchids have been grown and admired for quite some time, they have, until recently, been a very small niche market. This situation has changed rapidly as some of the most popular new orchids today are miniatures. Examples are multi-floral and miniature phalaenopsis (better suited as a pot plant then the standard larger white and pink hybrids); miniature and equitant oncidiums; small growing primary paphiopedilum hybrids, including some of the parvisepalum and the brachypetalum species and hybrids; "minicatts" that are now are in higher demand than their space-hogging full-sized plants; and many different color forms of dwarf dendrobiums like Den. kingianum and other very compact growing selections of Dendrobium phalaenopsis are now coming into the US market. Vandaceous miniatures using ascocentums have always been popular, but now newer hybrids using Neofinetia falcata, and dwarf angraecoids are producing a new range of charming and fragrant orchids. Even the more esoteric genera that contain many different miniatures, suited for growing in terrariums, including Maxillaria, Masdevallia, Pleurothallis, Bulbophyllum, Lepanthes, and Dracula are receiving much more attention in popular orchid literature and at orchid shows. These orchids and many others are featured in Steve's book, Miniature Orchids (Timber Press, 2006) and will be discussed and illustrated in this presentation.

Speaker: Marni Turkel
Formal meeting starts at 7:30 pm.
Location - Montview Presbyterian Church, 1980 Dahlia St., Denver, CO, 80220.
Coelogyne, Dendrochilum and Related Genera
Originally developed for the AOS Members Meeting in Sacramento, California in 2003, this program covers the 9 horticulturally significant genera of the 21 or so that comprise the subtribe Coelogyninae. These include not only Coelogyne and Dendrochilum, but also Pleione, Chelonistele, Pholidota and others. You will learn about the diversity within the different genera, see both common and rarely seen species as well as learn about habitat and how it relates to cultural needs.
Marni Turkel is a native of the San Francisco Bay Area and has been growing orchids since 1980. She has been growing in two greenhouses at her home in Santa Rosa, California. In August of 2006, her interest in dry rest plants led to the construction of a third, cold greenhouse intended for plants that benefit from a cool, dry winter. Her main interest is in cool-growing miniature species but plenty of larger plants have crept into the collection as well.
Marni will be bringing plants to sell and is happy to take preorders for delivery at the meeting. Please visit
