Denver Orchid Society Spring Show and Sale
Location: Tagawa Garden Center
7711 South Parker Road, Centennial, CO
(1 mile south of Arapahoe Road)
Setup - Friday March 13th.
Show - Sat/Sun March 14th and 15th.
The Theme of this year's Spring Show and Sale is "Orchid Carnival."
Since the Denver Botanic Gardens is still under construction, we will be holding our Spring Show and Sale at Tagawa Garden Center
on South Parker Road in Centennial. Tagawas is generously providing prime space in their greenhouses so we’ll have more room than ever,
lots of light, no gate fee to get in and plenty of parking. Come and join the fun. We’re going to need all hands on deck.
The spring show differs from the fall show because it is our most important fund raiser of the year. The Denver Orchid Society is the only
vendor at this show. Our club will purchase hundreds of blooming plants that will be sold to the public in a massive feeding frenzy of orchid
buying. Profits made from this show fund our budget for the year.
While this may sound like a lot of work, I can guarantee you it is also a great deal of fun. The Friday setup is like Christmas all over again.
Fantasy Orchids will be delivering van loads of plants to prepare for sale. (At least the plants that don't get snapped up by savy volunteers)
This year we will be offering a variety of price points to appeal to everyone's budget. There will also be a "Collector's Corner" offering plants
for the discriminating orchid collector.
During this chaos, members will be bringing in their own plants to create stunning displays on the exhibit floor adjacent to the sales area.
That's right, I said exhibits. By popular demand, this year's spring show will not be a bench show, but a full fledged, AOS judged exhibit show.
As you may have noticed at the top of the page, the theme is "Orchid Carnival." Carnival is a festive season and typically involves a public
celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations.
So put on your creativity caps and wow us all with a drop dead gorgeous display. For tips on how to exhibit your orchids to their best advantage,
go to our club website at www.DenverOrchidSociety.org and click on Orchid Events for the Do's and Don'ts of exhibiting as well as what to pack
in your show kit.
Starting at 10:00, exhbitors can begin setting up. There will be carts and helpers available to make move in easy. I know it's tricky to
determine early on if you're going to have plants blooming for an exhibit. But if you suddenly find yourself with plants to show, but haven't
called me for an exhibit space, please do so right away. I can add exhibits up to and including the day of the show. If you'd rather not create
an exhbit but have plants in bloom, please bring them to Tagawas during setup and we'll gladly include them in the DOS exhibit.
At previous shows, we have thrown a preview party the night of setup. There will not be a preview party before the spring show. Scheduling issues
at Tagawas, plus DOS budgetary constraints have made it necessary to forgo the party this spring. However, several members are talking about going out
Saturday night - more info to follow.
I'd like to thank everyone who has already signed up to help. Volunteers are the life blood for all society events and this is no exception.
No experience required. I still need quite a few people on Saturday and Sunday to help sell the plants, wrap them, bag them and take money.
There will be signup sheets at the February and March meetings and I'm sure you'll find just the right activity to sign up for.
Our judging chair, Marilyn Stark will be recruiting for judging clerks to help the judges on Saturday morning.
If any of the above sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, please contact me, Keith Funk at 303-234-9290, or keithfunk@comcast.net or
sign up at the February meeting. This is a great way to get to know other orchid society members better and get the most out of your society membership.
I looking foward to hearing from you soon.
